Module 1.2 - .........and the World Wide Web

Even though I have been taught it before I still have to remind myself that the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are not the same thing.

The Internet is a network of hardware and sift ware and is the base for the WWW to work.

The WWW is an application just like email that makes use of the Internet.

A working WWW needs the following:
  • A transfer protocol (HTTP)
  • A web server
  • Language to display information (HTML)
  • A web browser
  • Web pages
The WWW was the first many to many communication medium.

Module 1.1 - What is the Internet

I found all of the earlier concepts of the internet to be really interesting, especially, the ones that had this concept even through there wasn't any background knowledge, hardware or software to support that these theories were even remotely possible.

When you look at the early forms of computers and the Internet it is amazing to think of how quickly the use and technology of them has skyrocketed into what it is today. It is even more mind blowing to think what is possible in the near and distant future.

Module 1 Introduction - 'What 's in a name?'

  • Usernames - I have never really thought much about my user names before (I just use the same one for everything). It didn't even cross my mind that it may not be such a good idea to have the same one for everything, because it could enable people to find me anywhere - Cyberstalking. I feel very nieve now.
  • namechk.com - OMG how cool is this site. I didn't know anything like it existed.
  • Just a comment this week 1 activity can possibly make you realize how far from unique we are in some ways.
